My story, as an artist, began with the night sky. As a child I remember being on my grandparent’s farm and looking up at the vast Texas sky. In the daytime, that sky seemed oppressive and heavy (…maybe it was the heat). But later, at night... it became fertile and inviting. Its dark mystery and luminosity pulled me into it. In my mind, I would be immersed it; floating in space, in the sparkling, velvety blackness…. I felt creation.
I studied art history in Florence, Italy at a small liberal arts school named Fleming College. I began painting soon after, majoring in Art and Philosophy at Stephen F. Austin State University, in Texas. Later, I went to Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, NY, for graduate work, receiving a Master of Fine Arts. The conclusion of my academic career was at Hofstra University, NY where I received a Master of Science in Education.
I have painted in series, focusing on a theme or questions that interest me. My first series was called Texas Nights. This series of paintings emerged from my contemplations of the remarkable fact that out of nothing, something exists.
The second series was called Rock Paintings inspired by the natural forms of rocks and the effects of time.
My MFA thesis was an installation called, Altar of Acceptance. It combined painting and sculpture and explored my grief process after the deaths of three of my siblings.
Creation Game was the next series I painted. It was inspired by quantum physics, the landscape of the smallest elements of matter, the border between space and matter.
Now I am working on a new series entitled, Return Home. It is emerging out of, among other things, Zen meditation and the Hubble telescope photos.
To date my work has been exhibited at The Bronx Museum of Art (New York City) and The Northport Museum (New York): also gallery showings in New York City, Hoboken, NJ, Northport, NY, Athens, GA, and Dallas, TX. The Rock Paintings were the featured artworks at the Nature Conservancy Art Auction at Cold Spring Harbor, NY.
